How New Forklifts Evolved

Forklifts are highly efficient machines, born from the marriage of physics and chemistry and created by man himself. Forklifts are machines for lifting and transporting heavy objects by pushing a row of steel fingers under the load and raising them, afterwards it will withdraw its steel fingers when the load is already deposited. The invention of the forklift has forever changed the face of materials handling all over the globe.

Brief History of Forklifts
The use of forklifts was initiated during the First World War, when labor was greatly incapacitated by the loss of a large number of males in the workforce. Industries were encouraged to produce machines that would compensate for the loss, provide efficiency and ease on the remaining material handling workers.

Over the years, the forklift has undergone a lot of evolution. In 1917, an early version of forklift was a battery powered platform truck by the British makers Ransomes, Sims, and Jeffries. Subsequently, Clark Company in the United States developed their own version of a forklift truck: a powered truck and powered lift tractor for their factories. Other companies in the U.S. also release their own versions of forklifts in the lift truck market. World War II further spurred the use and production of forklifts, thus many companies begun to manufacture their own versions of forklifts due to increasing demand.

What to Expect from New Forklifts
From the older versions, new forklifts have been developed and are now available in different types. Common new forklifts include the hand pallet trucks, rider stacker, side loader, and walkies order picking truck and sod loader. Some new forklifts have been manufactured for specific uses and conditions. New forklifts such as reach trucks are made for small aisles such that their forks can extend to reach load, some forklifts are designed for areas with less than 5 feet width and some for lifting operators while they transfer objects above. New forklifts are considerably better and more efficient than the older versions.

When in the 19th century, forklifts have been utilized massively due to war efforts; new forklifts now are now largely used in commercial and private industries. Forklifts are efficient and useful in a wide range of material handling processes, from transferring potted plants in a pallet to harvesting salmons. Forklifts can be used only when the operator is registered and certified. Specific regulations as to maximum weight and centre of gravity is indicated in the nameplate of the forklifts and provided by the manufacturer. Surely, the safety, efficiency and functionality of forklifts have progressed over time. One can only hope that solar powered forklifts will be manufactured soon.
