Security At Work

Ensuring you have adequate security at work is incredibly important, both from a business perspective, and as a moral obligation for employers. This is the case for many reasons – to protect your staff (and possibly customers), to protect your business and its assets, to improve productivity and to prevent crimes of all kinds. Whether it’s a digital lock system then or a surveillance solution from Bosch security systems, you should have one or several security measures in place.

First of all you should focus on a good lock for your business premises. For small shops and restaurants a cylinder lock will be a good route to go down and these have many benefits over other mechanical locks such as the lever lock. One of these advantages is that a cylinder lock has more possible permeations than other mechanical locks, which makes it harder to break in to; the other is that they are easy and fairly easy to replace. Therefore should your workplace be robbed or a key go missing, you can fairly easily have the locks replaced.

For larger businesses however, digital locks have many more advantages and with lots of staff members will pay for the initial investment. These will be impossible to pick or open with a skeleton key (though they can be hacked) and can be operated or modified remotely to allow you to either let people in from an upstairs office, or change a code or security settings. With digital locks that utilise either pin codes or biometric data (such as finger prints), you will have the large advantage of not needing to give each employee a key and never needing to change the locks which can save a lot of money.

Another option in terms of locking mechanisms is to get a gate or shutter that can cover the front of your building. This is particularly useful for businesses with a ‘store front’ that looks out onto the street as it can help prevent accidental damage or vandalism by providing a barrier between the street and the windows and doors.

The next line of defence however is CCTV. A CCTV camera (good makes include Hikvision DVR and those from Bosch Security Systems or Samsung Techwin) will help you to monitor and record everything that happens within your premises which can help to dissuade crime or theft, but also act as evidence to aid in a police investigation or a court case should a crime occur and help improve your chances of getting what was stolen back. Look for a digital camera such as Hikvision DVR which is far superior to analogue models for larger businesses allowing for more ‘tracks’ to be recorded and enabling you to alter factors such as resolution and frame rate. Also ensure that your camera conforms to the ONVIF global standard to guarantee quality. Those models mentioned above, such as Samsung Techwin, should guarantee a certain amount of quality on their own. With all these systems and measures in place you can then hope that you will dissuade anyone from acts of crime directed towards your business or clients and rest assured you did everything in your power to prevent them.

How To Start A New Business With Capital?

The number one reason that businesses fail is under capitalization. The way you build your business capital is very important but normally all small businesses require some capital to get started. Depending on the business, you may only need the capital for a short period of time to develop an inventory or pay salaries. Other businesses may require facilities and equipment purchases in addition to some operating capital to cover business expenses until sales and revenues can support the business. Here are 7 sources of capital you can use to get your business on the right track:

    - Personal Capital. This is the source of capital that entrepreneurs turn to first because it’s the most easy to use. It’s the cash on hand, bank accounts, stock, and other sources of personal wealth that you can tap into for your business.

    - Your Home. A home equity line of credit will allow you to transfer the equity in your home to equity in your business. The difference between the value of your home and what you owe could be enough to cover your business start up expenses for a year.

    - Bank CD. Do you have a CD in the bank that isn’t matured yet? Instead of taking the penalty for early cash out, consider borrowing the money back, securing it with the CD.

    - Retirement Accounts. You can borrow money from yourself because it’s easy money to tap into, and some of the interest that you pay goes into your retirement account.

    - Friends and Family. Try to avoid this source of capital because of the potential relationship troubles if the business fails. Your decision to borrow from friends and family is a personal one, but it is often the easiest way to obtain investment capital.

    - Commercial Banks. When funding your business, commercial banks provide the greatest flexibility for types of loans. They will want to see your business plan, and usually six months to a year of track record.

    - Small Business Administration - Also known as SBA, is an independent government agency formed in 1953 to help small businesses. They provides loan guarantees, participates with bank loans, and makes a limited number of direct loans.

I think the biggest problem that business owners have is that they are perfectionists. They have started a business doing something that they are good at but it is difficult to get staff that can duplicate what you do. Therefore many business owners tire out and after a period of time they are burned out because they try to do everything themselves.

There are so many sources of capital out there to get your business started but I hope you get the point with the few that is mentioned. As a business owner and you’re borrowing money at the start of your business, you must be careful of what you’re trying to accomplish because if its not thought out properly this can cause a strain on cash flows and income in order to make debt payments.

The Importance of Google Analytics

Well, you’ve set up your website but how do you know who has visited it and how effective it is? It may look good to you and your mum will have told you that it looks lovely – but as a business tool, is it working and having the desired effect of bringing in customers and getting you noticed? That’s where Google analytics comes in handy.

The analytics will allow you to see who is viewing your site (and sometimes where they are based in the world), so again you can see whether there are any trends or patterns around who is most likely to hit upon your site and for how long they visited each time. It will also tell you which pages they viewed so you can see which are the most popular and which pages are perhaps not working for you.

You can set up email campaigns which are targeted at your chosen audience and then Google will tell you who has opened them, read them and how many ‘click-throughs’ to your own website you’ve had on the back of them. This enables you to revise your campaigns as you go along so that you know exactly where your marketing tactics need to be improved.

Like any other web tool, it’s relatively easy to set up and use but there are also add ons which you can select if you want to get really involved. It can actually become quite addictive!

On the back of your statistics, you may decide to revise your website completely or just target specific areas which you feel need to bring in the customer further. You will soon get a feel for which bits are working and which aren’t.

You can set up Google analytics to work in conjunction with other Google money-making sites such as Google Adwords, Adsense and so on. Additionally, this allows you to improve your return on investment (ROI) for the business and you can determine which visits to your websites are converting into sales for you – this is a huge enhancement and a very useful tool for any business person. Website hits are all very well and good but we want them converted into referrals and ultimately cash.

So if you’re a natural ‘curtain-twitcher’ and can’t resist wondering what others are up to, then Google analytics is for you and your website! It’s not spyware because it can’t pinpoint who your customers are and where they live exactly – but it can tell you how popular your website is and who is bothering to read your email blasts. Watch those campaigns turn into hits and your hits turn into cash.
